“We have plenty of time.” Mrs. Beacon’s quiet voice brought Joshua’s attention back to the dire situation he was facing. “Let’s sit down so we can be comfortable while y2ou tell us your ‘long story.’ Before we begin, I’m going to grab a bottle of water.”

Even though no one else asked, his mom brought a bottle of water for her husband and son. She placed one on the end table next to Joshua and the other on the coffee table in front of the sofa. Then his mom sat on the sofa next to her husband. Joshua squirmed nervously.

He couldn’t look his parents in the eye. Instead, he looked at the floor as his mom opened her bottle of water and took a drink. When he heard her put it on the table, he said, “I don’t think you’re going to believe me, but I promise you I’m going to tell you the truth. But can you do me one favor and wait until I tell you the whole story before you ask me any questions?” When he finished speaking, he finally looked up at his parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Beacon looked at each other for a long moment. Then they looked back at Joshua. “Of course,” they said simultaneously.

Joshua should have been used to his parents’ silent communication, but it never failed to surprise him. It was like they could read each other’s thoughts. It was creepy how often they finished each other’s sentences.

“Okay, Mom and Dad. Before I begin, I need to go get something out of my room. I’ll be right back!” Joshua said as he ran out of the room. When he returned, he handed the ivory box to his father. He was so anxious and afraid about telling his story that he didn’t see the look of astonishment and fear on his parents’ faces as they stared at the box.

Joshua took a deep breath and began to tell them about everything he had experienced since the night he had heard the Ancient One call him three times. He didn’t leave out anything except his encounters with Firewind. He thought that the idea of a bird that only he could see that sat on his shoulder and gave advice was a little too much information to give them all at once. He also didn’t tell them about his troubles with Ji2mmy Gates. He didn’t want them to worry about the bullying experiences he had been suffering through.

By the time, he finished, Joshua’s face was soaking wet with sweat. He pulled the edge of his shirt up and wiped his face, as he braced himself for his parents’ disbelief and outrage. But to his great surprise, moments passed, and nothing happened. Instead, his parents just sat there staring at him strangely. It was almost as if they were the ones who were afraid.

“Mom…Dad? What’s going on? Why are you looking at me like that? Why are2n’t you saying anything?”

His parents exchanged glances. Then his father said, “Don’t worry, Maria.
