âWe have plenty of time.â Mrs. Beaconâs quiet voice brought Joshuaâs attention back to the dire situation he was facing. âLetâs sit down so we can be comfortable while y2ou tell us your âlong story.â Before we begin, Iâm going to grab a bottle of water.â
Even though no one else asked, his mom brought a bottle of water for her husband and son. She placed one on the end table next to Joshua and the other on the coffee table in front of the sofa. Then his mom sat on the sofa next to her husband. Joshua squirmed nervously.
He couldnât look his parents in the eye. Instead, he looked at the floor as his mom opened her bottle of water and took a drink. When he heard her put it on the table, he said, âI donât think youâre going to believe me, but I promise you Iâm going to tell you the truth. But can you do me one favor and wait until I tell you the whole story before you ask me any questions?â When he finished speaking, he finally looked up at his parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Beacon looked at each other for a long moment. Then they looked back at Joshua. âOf course,â they said simultaneously.
Joshua should have been used to his parentsâ silent communication, but it never failed to surprise him. It was like they could read each otherâs thoughts. It was creepy how often they finished each otherâs sentences.
âOkay, Mom and Dad. Before I begin, I need to go get something out of my room. Iâll be right back!â Joshua said as he ran out of the room. When he returned, he handed the ivory box to his father. He was so anxious and afraid about telling his story that he didnât see the look of astonishment and fear on his parentsâ faces as they stared at the box.
Joshua took a deep breath and began to tell them about everything he had experienced since the night he had heard the Ancient One call him three times. He didnât leave out anything except his encounters with Firewind. He thought that the idea of a bird that only he could see that sat on his shoulder and gave advice was a little too much information to give them all at once. He also didnât tell them about his troubles with Ji2mmy Gates. He didnât want them to worry about the bullying experiences he had been suffering through.
By the time, he finished, Joshuaâs face was soaking wet with sweat. He pulled the edge of his shirt up and wiped his face, as he braced himself for his parentsâ disbelief and outrage. But to his great surprise, moments passed, and nothing happened. Instead, his parents just sat there staring at him strangely. It was almost as if they were the ones who were afraid.
âMomâ¦Dad? Whatâs going on? Why are you looking at me like that? Why are2nât you saying anything?â
His parents exchanged glances. Then his father said, âDonât worry, Maria.
